8 of the Best Calming Bedroom Colour Schemes

I wanted to share some of my favourite bedroom colour schemes with you today because I’m in the midst of deciding on a paint colour for my own walls at home.

One of my new year’s decorating resolutions is to finally make some more permanent changes to the house, and I figure that the bedroom is a good place to start.

The focus in this post is around calming bedroom colour schemes. I’m by no means against loud explosions of colour, but I prefer to keep those in living areas. For me, the bedroom is a soothing place to relax, so let’s explore some colour inspo below from my friends at Linen House.

1. White on White (with a little Grey)

People often assume that all-white rooms instantly evoke a sense of calm. There is some truth to this, but an all-white room can also feel sterile and clinical. It’s essential you bring in some soft supporting shades like grey to give the room depth and variance. Otherwise all the white blends together and the room feels boring.

The scene above has just the right amount of grey and some soft timber tones. They bring life to the space and break up any potential monotony. There are a range of softer accent colours you can introduce to a white room to elevate the look of it without it overwhelming the scene. Click here to see what they are.

2. White and Blue (with Natural Elements)

If you want to go a step further and look beyond grey, soft blue tones work really well in an all-white scheme too. Blue is on the cool side of the colour wheel, so it’s great in a space if you want it to feel crisp and calm.

You’ll also notice some nude tones, a little grey, and natural elements in the room above. It just goes to show that bedroom colour schemes do go some of the way in making a space feel calm, but texture is super important as well.

In this scene, there’s a lot of texture at play (brick, macrame, concrete, glass, wood and more). Click here to check out my tips on getting texture right in a space.

3. Monochromatic Blue

Any monochromatic colour story will make a space feel soothing, but if I had to choose a colour to explore this approach with, it’s gotta be blue.

The reason monochromatic is a great approach when it comes to bedroom colour schemes is because it’s void of contrast. Any colours that contrast greatly against one another make a room feel really visually stimulating. But if the space has varying tones of the one colour (as seen above) it’s really easy on the eye. But, as I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s not at all boring.

Blonde timbers make an appearance here and I’m loving every minute of it. Click here to check out some amazing decor from the blue and blonde interiors trend (and shop it, too!).

4. Deep Teal

Teal is perhaps my all-time favourite colour, and in the scene above it’s gone next level. The latest approach to paint in rooms is to take the colour in a muddy or muted direction, and the above room certainly does the former. It’s a deep, rich and muddy version of teal that instantly brings not only calm to the space but a sense of sophistication too.

Paired with mid-toned timbers and blue and white striped bedding, the scene feels quite relaxed. It also strikes a great balance between masculine and feminine, with some super-subtle pink shades featured in the pillow cases. Couldn’t you just dive right into that bed!?

5. Milky Grey and Pink

Blushes, nudes, millennial pink; all of these wonderfully feminine tones have been huge of late, especially in bedding and soft furnishings. The bedroom above features these shades, but they are seriously muted so they don’t feel visually overwhelming.

Grey is the star of the show here, and it’s so light that you could almost mistake it for white in the setting above. But it’s definitely grey, just gorgeously milky and used on a larger scale to make the space feel serene.

Of all the bedroom colour schemes in this post, this one has such a sense of tranquility to it. And I love the pattern that’s been made with the square wall moulding. A nice contrast to the feminine pattern on the bed.

6. Silvery Blues and Pinks

Above we explored monochrome blue, adding blue to a white colour story, and adding pinks to a milky grey palette. Here, it’s like we’ve mixed all of those colours together and let them loose in the one room, but the approach is so subtle.

The paint on the wall is a silvery blue, which works perfectly to give the space a sense of whimsy. By introducing white bedding with splashes of blue and lashes of pink, it just further enhances the sense of play. It’s a relaxed scene that’s soothing to the eye and definitely more on the feminine side.

That pine half-crescent bedhead is giving me serious heart palpitations, by the way. Isn’t it amazing?

7. Monochromatic Pink

You saw how divine it was when blue was executed in a monochrome fashion. Well, now it’s time to gush over pink in all its monochromatic glory.

The wall paint is the starting point, of course, and here it’s quite a milky shade. I also love how the colour changes depending how much light hits it. And when you bring in the nude leather headboard and side tables, it takes the room in such a laidback but intriguing direction.

The deep pink bedding is also a fave of mine. So chic, so sophisticated! What do you reckon?

8. Dark Green and Oatmeal

Of all the bedroom colour schemes in this post, the one above is the most impactful. And while you might not consider dark green to be a calming colour, it can be when done right.

They key, of course, is to use it once on a large scale, like your wall, but then nowhere else. Let the paint be the one wow moment, and then turn town the tone and texture everywhere else.

The bed and the linen, both in beige, oatmeal tones, take up enough visual real estate to balance out the green. So ensure you have a large dose of it in the room and you can’t go wrong.

  1. I love these. Thank you. What is the secret to making the comforter/duvet look so fluffy and that boho almost unmade look?

    1. Thanks Maureen! A good trick is to put multiple inserts/quilts into the covers. Might end up lumpy, but with practice you’ll get the hang of it. Also a good quality quilt inside the cover. Nice and thick and fluffy. Also add layers like a throw and fold back the duvet.

Keep in mind though, the bed shots you see in photo shoots can be refluffed and redone over and over to get that perfect shot, so don’t stress over it too much as you’ll never get it to look like a photo shoot for long.

  2. Hi Chris! Interesting post… For the last several weeks, I’ve read a preponderance of (millenial pink-haters) comments on blogs and websites. There are colors I do not care for, but none that would make me inclined to make such hostile comments. Just a thought, shared. So many pretty colour palettes on your post today, thanks for sharing. I told my husband I wanted to do a refresh on our master bedroom in the next month or two. I am completely drawn to the Silvery Blues and Pinks, also the Milky Grey and Pink. Before I show these to him, do you think these palettes are too feminine for a master bedroom? I find them to be delightfully serene. Great post!

    1. Hey Jaye. So odd that people go onto blogs and write awful things. Thankfully I don’t think I’ve ever had a negative comment here which is awesome (and lucky, by the sounds of it!).

Regarding the colours you like, both will work without being too feminine. You could simply add in some charcoal grey (in pillows and sheets) to make it more masculine and bring some balance. Hope this helps 🙂
