The Colours You Should Be Using in The Colder Months that People Tell You Not To

The world of decorating can get a little confusing when so many conflicting messages are flying at you: use this colour in summer, use this one in winter, this one’s warm, this one’s cold. It’s a lot of info to wade through, right?

Today, I’m going to make it a whole lot clearer.

Here’s the true story: there are tones that are better to use in particular seasons, not colours themselves. Tone is everything when it comes to make a room look and feel a particular way, so that’s what we’ll focus on in this post as the colder weather rolls in Down Under.

This post is produced in partnership with Lorraine Lea.

Moody Blues Work Well in Cold Weather

Blue is often a colour people associate with summer. And of course, it can be. But the colours to use in summer are brighter and more vivid. Think vibrant shades like cobalt, turquoise or teal for warm weather styling, or a really chalky sky blue is also a winner.

When the weather gets colder, you want your bedroom to feel more sumptuous and inviting, so it’s nice to look to moodier blues like indigo, denim or navy. These tones will create more cosines, especially when you mix a number of different blue tones in together.

The bedroom above, for example, features the gorgeous Fraser Quilt Cover Set in a cloudy blue tone. But then we have the navy shades present in the cushion on top of the bed and in the Indiana Vase on the side table.

This is monochromatic styling at its best, and it creates a lot of visual interest.

Make Sure You Pair Them With The Right Neutrals Though

While there’s a medley of blue tones across the bedroom scene above, you’ll also notice plenty of charcoal grey. This is the kind of neutral you want to work with in Autumn and Winter, because it keeps the scene feeling grounded and easy on the eye.

A crisp white sheet set is something you could do here, but because the bedding is a lighter tone you’re better of going with a moody grey to ground the room. We want to keep it low-key and sumptuous after all, so the Premium Percale Sheet Set in Pewter is my top pick.

Also featured above: The cosy Allegra Cushion Cover, which brings subtle texture to the bedscape (another really important element that I’ll touch on below).

You’ll Also Want to Turn Up The Texture

When the weather is colder you’ll naturally want to layer up your bed more. I showed you how to style your bed properly in this post, so it’ll come as no surprise that I’m a ‘more is more’ person when it comes to the amount of cushions and pillows I’d include here.

In colder months, especially when using a colour like blue, you’d be wise to turn up the texture as well. You want to look to quilt cover sets with some added tactility. You’ll see it in the bedding above with its wonderful stitch detail and quilting, which adds such warmth to the scene.

In accessories on top of the bed, consider cushions and throws with embellishments like tassels, pom-poms, fringing and cable knit. Even materials like faux fur can add essential cosiness, so don’t be afraid to have a play with pieces like this when making the bed.

Green Is Also A Winning Colour, In The Right Tone

Green bedding is a fave of mine. In fact, green in general is a winner at home. It’s one of this year’s trending colours for the kitchen, so why not bring it into your bedroom too? Many people will say green is a summer colour, but again it’s all about tone.

Brighter green tones like lime or fern I would agree belong in summer bedrooms. But muddier tones like olive, sage or moss are so at home in a cold-weather spaces. They evoke cosiness and calm, which is exactly what you want on an Autumn or Winter night.

The Harbin Quilt Cover Set you see in the bedroom above is dark and moody without feeling too serious; a successful tone to pair with grey or white depending on how much contrast you want to bring to the space. Let’s discuss contrast in the next section below.

Pair Moody Green with High or Low Contrast Colours

You really have to go on your own adventure when decorating your bedroom in the cooler months. It’s your bedroom after all, so it has to reflect your personal style and the colours you love. But whether it’s high contrast or low contrast can change the way the space feels.

A higher contrast room pairs a moody green colour with a crisp white, for example. That’s the way it’s been done in the bedroom above. Premium Percale Sheets in White are a big tonal jump from the darker green. It makes the space a bit more visually exciting.

A lower contrast room would pair the moody green bedding with equally moody charcoal or beige tones. This approach would make the scene less visually invigorating. So it really comes down to how dazzling you want the space to be.

The headboard in the bedroom above is a nice moody grey tone, so overall there’s a great sense of balance between all the tones in the space.

Again, Make Sure You Look to Texture to Keep it Cosy

Be it moody blue tones or muddy green ones, you’ll definitely want to up the texture when it comes to accessories. The cushion and throw above are a perfect example of the sorts of pieces you can rock this Autumn and Winter to make your bedroom feel warm and welcoming.

The tassels on both pieces will work wonders in adding visual interest, and you can mix and match colours together to create your own unique style story.

Which tones are you going to be using at your place this season? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below. Drop me your go-to shades!
