From Retro to Ravishing: Inside a Stunning $1000 Kitchen Renovation

With the nation in the midst of a kitchen design obsession (I blame The Block), I thought it might be nice to showcase the gorgeous – and real life – kitchen renovation of TLC reader Connie Sharpe. I’ve featured her living room on the blog before and am blown away by her eye for design. This kitchen before and after just goes to prove how good the eye really is! Let’s take a closer look…

Transforming this kitchen from a retro 70s moment to a bright and modern space all started with tackling the cabinetry.

“The brown cupboards and skirtings were something I wanted to change,” Connie tells me. “I knew doing that alone would dramatically change the feel.

The updates in this kitchen renovation aren’t particularly huge; the original layout has been kept, with cosmetic changes like colour and texture doing all the work to reinvent this room.

“I have a big love for fresh white, grey and timber with a pop of colour,” Connie explains of the palette at play in the new kitchen. “The wall paint was chosen to tie in with the rest of our home. I want our whole home to flow from room to room with a bright, happy and calm feeling”.

If you’ve looked at Connie’s living room you’ll see that the same colour story is indeed linking the zones in her home. It’s a smart design approach and has resulted in a cohesive interior throughout.

The time frame was also surprisingly fast for a project like this. Connie tells me that the entire space only took two weekends to transform, but admits that “having a hands on husband who loves working with timber is also a bonus!”.

The best part, of course, was the outlay; this room only cost $1000 to transform!

What do you think of this kitchen renovation? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

  1. I like how the wood is a feature around the white cabinets. I definately want to have a go at painting cupboards to give them a new lease of life, its so much easier and fairly inexpensive compared to what a whole new kitchen costs to renovate!
