It’s time to bite the bullet and explore upholstered office chairs on wheels. Because if you’re still working from home in a dining chair, you’re doing it wrong. Now that you’ve selected your dream chair, you need to make sure it’s not going to damage your floors. Read on for some tips for protecting hard floors and carpet from your new office chair.
Protecting Your Floor from your Chair Wheels
If you’ve come this far, it’s fair to say you’re into office chairs on wheels as much as I am. But the last thing you want to do is purchase the chair and then have it ruin your floors. So let me impart a few pearls of wisdom when it comes to wheels on flooring.

Carpet Floors
Trying to drag a wheeled chair across carpet is near impossible. It’s like wading through quicksand but with the added fear of the entire chair tipping over and you going A over T.
To avoid tearing your carpet apart, or having it ripple, you’re going to need a plastic chair mat. They’re pretty affordable and while they’re not exactly the sexiest thing to happen to flooring, they are essential.

It’s important you know how high your carpet pile is. Different height carpets require different chair mats. Each mat features little grips on the underside that hold onto the carpet so the mat stays in place.

Hard Floors
While it’s imperative you have a chair mat on carpeted floors, it’s not necessarily crucial you have one on a hard floor. It does depend on what the chair wheels are made from though.
If the chair wheels are made from a soft rubber/plastic they should be fine on your hard floor.
If you’re worried and want to be on the safe side, you can purchase floor mats that work just like the carpeted ones do, except they don’t have the little grips underneath.

It might end up being a case of you buying the chair and then giving it a little test on your hard floor. It will take seconds to determine if it’s going to scratch the surface.
