100% with you Chris!! Should have been R&R for the win! All bathrooms had standout elements, to their credit. Although too many of them had too many hero’s imho. But Ryan & Rachael nailed a beautiful timeless, elegant and functional bathroom.

I’m with you Chris- didn’t love the boys tiles and it would drive me nuts too. I loved Rachel and Ryan’s bathroom and honestly thought it would win. Sarah Jane’s was the next favourite.

I can’t understand with all the money spent on these houses, why the toilet in the ensuites can’t be separated in the room so someone can use the bathroom while someone is using the toilet. We are building at the moment and that was one of our must do’s.

Hi Chris,

I saved this page over a year ago now. Thanks for the pendant info you have given. We’d like some advice on hanging a pendant cluster (they are a statement piece) in our indoor atrium located at the entry to our double storey home. There is a window above the entry which overlooks the atrium and the balustrade is a full plaster pony wall. The atrium measures 3.9 mt x 1.83 mt.

My overall thoughts. I could not comprehend the confusing win. It was too busy with conflicting finishes. Maybe the same rustic tile in a simpler pattern may have worked. Clawfoot baths belong in a Victorian period home. Too much gaudy and gold for me. The pendant light I felt was more in keeping in a hallway. TLC choice was calm, balanced and staged for the broader market. Question: Did all use heated towel rails and exhaust fans. To me that is essential for any bathroom. Nothing like stepping out of a shower/bath and cocooning yourself in a warm towel.

I’m never a fan of blue in a bathroom so Tom and Sarah Jane did not have me at ‘hello’. Nor did I like their chandelier, and I am usually very much a chandelier girl! It looked too 1980s era so I was surprised to hear it was restored from elsewhere in the house. It should have stayed there. Also, why was their shower screen so short?
Dylan and Jenny lost me with the shower in a box in the corner. Also I agree the gold on those bath feet needs tarnishing, though a bath under a window does look good, hope that window is double glazed. Brrr.
I liked the symmetry in Rachel and Ryan’s bath/shower area, quite commanding. And I loved the rustic wooden vanity, yes, that screams modern country to me, and warmth in an otherwise cold room. Their tile choice is lovely too.
As for Ankur and Sharon, yuck, style murder scene, nothing to see here, move along folks.
I did like Omar and Oz’s room; agree though it was too many finishes in the one space vying for attention. Just the floor tiles and VJ panelling or just the herringbone and plain plaster and non-patterned floor tiles. I actually loved the rustic herringbone wall tiles so I’d go the latter (plain floor and plain plaster) but there needs to be another element of ‘imperfect’ styling choice for a little balance…prettier mirrors, vanity or bowls? The tap ware is a gorgeous finish though, maybe that would be enough. Nah. I’d want different mirrors that don’t look like a medicine cabinet.

The judges comments about the WC being at the door in Ankur and Sharon’s bathroom is a valid point but the boys Oz and Omar had the same and i find it very poor bathroom design. Also do not like the brown edges on their tiles. Personally I like Dylan’s and Jenny’s especially the layout.

I agree 100% Chris with your review. I loved Rachel & Ryan’s bathroom and feel it should complement the “country lodge” house style they mentioned last week. I’m hoping that the “lodge” vibe they’re going for has some modern colonial elements to it. As for Omar & Oz, I felt their herringbone tiles would be more suited to a Mediterranean Boho style with terracotta tiles or timber floors.

I must have had a bad experience in a dark green country bedroom, with wood features, because those rooms give me the creeps. I think they remind me of school camp dormitories in old country buildings. Or rental properties. Am I being too harsh? I would not be at all thrilled as a guest being shown to my room for the evening. I don’t see how ‘country’ equates to dark green and dark wood. I love the light, bright rooms and agree window dressings need attention – definitely sheers – maybe something a bit textural in an oat colour. I think being ‘country’ Victoria, it would be wise to move away from rustic, towards a more refined ‘farmhouse chic’.
I know this was the first room. They will improve as they go, and they sure do have a long road ahead. The conditions look torturous. I couldn’t do it, so really, who am I to judge? Haha.

First week, there were some hits and miss’s but they did well for amateurs. For me a North Queenslander, looking at those rooms and the horrible weather, they reflected too much cold weather styling. I would like to see more warm bedrooms. Living areas can have those wonderful softer colours and big country wood fires.

I agree entirely… I did not like Tom and Sarah’s room at all. It resembled Mr and Mrs Claus bedroom. I also question how a room can win when there is NO storage. I did not understand the purpose of the ‘end of the bed table’… On a more positive note, the ceiling rose, and wainscoting were lovely.
Dylan and Jenny IMHO had a vision they just did not execute it well, resulting in the room looking a little bland. The colours were lovely, they had good storage and I really like the panelling
Ankur and Sharon tried to bring in the use of timber as a standout feature, for the most it worked well. I was not a fan of the bed head.
Joel and Elle. I did not think their room deserved quite the level of criticism that it received. Yes, it missed the heritage mark however the colour pallet was lovely and the styling quite good.
Omar and Oz. I quite liked the pallete and they had good storage. They just need to move away from the scandi look

Maybe in a short 48hour room presentation, the local shopping centre could only supply a quick roller blind off the shelf solution. It must’ve been a very quick shop and grab for bedlinen and furniture, I’m sure they will get into their groove soon, as the rooms get ticked off and the judges start giving brutal comments, sorry constructive suggestions. lol. good fun for a Sunday night.
