13 Australian Abstract Artists whose Work You Need to Know About

Eager to support some Australian abstract artists by hanging some of their work on your walls? I’ve got you covered in today’s post. I just hope you’re prepared for all this talent.

Boy do I love me some abstract art. I feature it in so many of my interior design projects. It’s so easy and versatile to work into a scheme and it really creates a focal point in a space. And it’s even better when you know the artist is a local who is truly appreciative of your purchase, don’t you think?

I’ve featured a number of these divine Aussie artists on the blog in the past. You know that I’m all about supporting our talent. But there’s possibly a number of Australian abstract artists you’ve never discovered before. Until now! I’m lifting the lid on 13 of my faves below. I’d love for you to let me know if there’s an Aussie artist I’ve missed in this list.

The art in the hero image above is from the super talented Michael Bond, who I’ll fill you in a bit more on below. But in the meantime, let’s not waste another moment taking you inside the list of my fave Australian abstract artists.

Oh – and if you need advice on how to choose art for your home, click here for my expert tips.

1. Prudence Caroline

The artwork above is one of many you can score from Prudence, whose work is packed with colour and interest. She describes her work as scruffy and haphazard, but I’d describe it more as truly magical. I would sell my first-born child to secure some of her work for my home. Check out more of Prudence’s creations here.

2. Leah Bartholomew

Leah’s work is influenced by her time in nature, in and around Northern NSW and the Gold Coast. It’s wonderfully optimistic and created using torn pieces of paper; put together in a collage style. The results speak for themselves and are truly eye-catching. You can explore more of Leah’s organic-inspired artwork here.

3. Catherine Hiller

Catherine is my new fave artist. I’ve actually commissioned a piece from her for my Murrumbeena interior design project. It’s going to be the eye-catching feature moment in the living room. Catherine is a highly emotive artist and I love that the longer you look at her captivating works, the more intriguing they become. Visit Catherine Hiller online here or visit her in her St Kilda studio.

5. Jessie Rigby

You’ve seen her work on The Block in recent years, and she’s definitely taken the local market by storm ever since. I’m such a big fan of Jessie Rigby’s abstract art that I got a piece for my Camberwell client to display in the hallway. Jessie’s work is inspired by the Victorian countryside and works with mixed mediums including acrylics, oil pastels, gouache, and metallic pigments. Definitely an Australian abstract artist to get behind.

8. Georgie Wilson

Some Australian abstract artists are all about in-your-face colour, but Mornington Peninsula creative Georgie Wilson prefers a more subdued approach to hue. 11. Chalie Macrae

The image above is from my recently completed Hamptons project and you can see Chalie Macrae’s stunning work adorning the wall in the dining room. Isn’t it just the most captivating piece of art you’ve ever laid eyes upon? Chalie shuts herself inside her Yarraville studio for days at a time to produce her gorgeous abstract creations. She works with oils and acrylics, and gravitates towards a palette that is inspired by nature. So soothing, so chic.

12. Fern Siebler

Another amazing Australian abstract artist whose work you would have seen on The Block in 2019 is Fern Siebler. A self-taught creative, Fern is certainly not afraid of colour, using her talents with hue to create artworks inspired by the fluidity and movement of the earth’s elements; water, air, fire and smoke.
