Memory Foam Mattress Reviews: 3 Top Brands Tested

I’ve conducted my fair share of memory foam mattress reviews over the last five years.

I’ve slept on both the Ecosa memory foam mattress and the Ergoflex memory foam mattress in my own home. And most recently I’ve ordered, unpacked and sat on a Koala mattress for one of my interior design clients. That’s three memory foam mattresses all given the once over. And trust me when I say that they’re all completely different.

In today’s post I want to give you a little info on my experience with all three, and give you the pros and cons of each. Selecting which one to put in your bedroom can be tough, so hopefully this makes things a little easier.

Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattress

Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattress

I found Ergoflex to be the most dense and cushy of the three. It was the mattress that felt like it moulded to my body the most while I slept.

When you sit on the mattress you sink into it, so you can definitely feel the Visco-Elastic doing its thing. It’s the heaviest of the three to move around, so you can rest assured that it’s packed with memory foam.

The mattress took some getting used to, as I’d not slept on a mattress before that moulds to your body into in this way. I ended up keeping it on the bed for about six months before I replaced it. It got quite hot in summer. This was back in 2014 though, and I understand that they’ve now updated the design with a Cool-Sleep Airflow System.

I reckon this one’s great for people with back pain and injury. If you want to know more, I did a more in-depth review of the Ergoflex mattress here.

The Ergoflex memory foam mattress costs $999 for Queen. Find out more here.

Ecosa Memory Foam Mattress on TLC Interiors

Ecosa Memory Foam Mattress

I have an Ecosa memory foam mattress on my guest bed and I try to warn guests before they sit down on it, because it’s really firm. It has three layers of foam construction inside it to thank for that, but once you lay down you do start to slowly sink into it.

It’s by no means as cushy as the Ergoflex mattress, and you can sit on the side of it without sliding off. It’s firm all the way around, so you can definitely roll over on it without your partner being affected.

The latex top layer and internal support foam make it feel really breathable, so it doesn’t heat up the way I found the Ergoflex did in summer. Does it feel snuggly and cosy to sleep in? No. But it is awesome if you love a firm mattress.

Family and friends who stay over all have mixed reviews of this. I guess it takes more than a night or two to get used to. Some say that despite it being firm initially, they had a great night’s sleep. Others found it too hard all-round.

I did an in-depth review of this mattress in this post if you want to know more.

The Ecosa memory foam mattress costs $1099 for Queen. Find out more here.

All three mattresses have a trial period, so you can give all of them a test run and return them if you’re not happy.

Koala Memory Foam Mattress

If you’re after a memory foam mattress that looks and feels the most like a ‘regular’ mattress, Koala has you covered.

This mattress is soft and cushy. It’s the lighter of the three and is plush to lay down on. So you won’t find yourself needing to adjust to it. The mattress features open-cell foam which gives it improved breathability, and it does feel light and soft.

That said, I sat on the side of it and it sunk down pretty quickly. There are videos of the team sitting a red wine glass on the mattress and jumping on it without spilling the wine. That wouldn’t work if the wine was closer to the edge, I assure you.

It doesn’t have the body-moulding effect that the Ergoflex does, nor is it as firm as the Ecosa. But maybe your concern isn’t about firmness or moving around in the night.

If you’re after a quick, easy, soft and cushy solution, I’d give Koala a go. They can get the mattress out to you in four hours if you’re in a metro area, and they have a 120 night trial period.

The Koala Memory Foam Mattress costs $1050 for Queen. Find out more here.

The Verdict

There are heaps of memory foam mattress reviews online, and it can be so hard to wade through them all and find one that’s right for you.

My advice: It really depends on what you’re looking for with your mattress. If you have no body ailments and want a simple and quick solution, go with Koala. If you have back or neck injuries and need support, go for Ergoflex. And if you’re after a mattress that’s firm and ensures no disturbance to your partner, go with Ecosa.

Have you conducted your own memory foam mattress reviews at home? I’d love to hear what you loved and loathed about them in the comments below.

  1. Would you recommend any of these three to someone who’s a stomach sleeper? I’ve been considering getting a memory foam mattress but I’m worried that it might not be good for a stomach sleeper like me, but I never realized there was so much difference between the different brands. Maybe if I just get the right one, it’ll be fine?

    1. It’s really hard to say, everyone has such a different sleep style and what one person likes won’t work for the next, even if they’re both stomach sleepers. Most of these brands have sleep and return guarantees, up to 100 or 120 nights I think, so don’t be afraid to try them out.
