What I Know about Life, with Shaynna Blaze

TLC’s What I Know about Life series is back, and this time around I’ve asked one of the country’s most popular designers to tell us a bit about what she’s learned on her journey.

It’s hard to imagine Shaynna Blaze before she became a judge on The Block and a home staging guru on Selling Houses Australia. We’ve been so accustomed to seeing this lovely lady on our screens multiple times a week. Envisioning her as a regular person almost seems impossible.

But in this interview Shaynna has reminded me that she, like everyone else, has experienced the highs and lows in life, and has learnt a lot along the way. Outside of her work on TV and in design, she’s a mum whose realised that laughter is the best medicine (and boy does she have a cracking laugh!).

Shaynna’s new show, Deadline Design, has been inspiring me to no end the past few weeks. In this post I wrote recently, I asked why Australia produced so few design shows, but I’m so glad Shaynna’s is proving to be a hit.

Are you watching it? I’ve found it to be such a good insider look at how all the pieces of a reno – big or small – come together.

What I Know about Life, with Shaynna Blaze

When I was younger, I used to think life was all about… waiting for the next school holidays. And summer was about the pool, wearing my towel on my head and eating icy-poles.

One of the biggest turning points in my life was... having kids; it puts everything in perspective.

Being a mother has taught me… patience, resilience, warmth and kindness (but most of all, protector).

One of the things I wish people would do more is… have common courtesy.

The biggest thing I’ve learnt about life in the spotlight is… that everyone seems to know you as you are in their lounge room every day. I forget that and think “how do they know it’s me?”.

As I move through life, I’ve come to realise that… laughter is the best medicine.

If I could tell my younger self one thing, it’d be… it will all work out in the end. And trust your gut instinct, it’s rarely wrong.

The thing I’ve learnt to love about myself is… my laugh. I use to embarrass a lot of people with how loud it is. But people seem to like it these days. (I did say laughter is the best medicine…)

My hope for the future is… the world to stop being such an angry place!

What’s your biggest life lesson, or mantra you live by? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
