News of the Pantone Colour of the year 2016 was stuffed with some extra excitement this time around; there was not one hue to celebrate, but two glorious shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity.
Pantone says that the blending of these two hues brings with it a sense of comfort and balance. The warm tones of the Rose Quartz and the cool tones of Serenity are also said to evoke calm, order and peace.
I can’t help but notice that there’s a merge here of stereotypically male and female colours – blue and pink. Pantone were all too aware of this when announcing the chosen tones, and has said that this decision was all about celebrating the gender blur and giving a good nod to equality between the sexes.
Pantone also says that choosing these two colours reflected our confidence with using hue to express ourselves, and not being restricted or confined by notions that pink is for girls and blue for boys. They’re calling us “a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged,” and I couldn’t be happier that we’re throwing away such outdated thinking!
Of course, the obvious question is, how do I rock the colours in the Pantone Colour of the year 2016 release? Well, I’m going to show you now.
How to Rock the Pantone Colour of the Year 2016
The great thing about both Rose Quartz and Serenity – and any variation of them – is that they work so well against a white colour palette.
Given that the majority of us have this backdrop at home means that we can bring in these colours into a space in any scale and proportion we choose.
If you want to go all out (and I always admire a decorator with guts in this area), try a feature wall or similar moment using one or both of the shades. The image above is quite a striking example of how you can use these colours to great effect to create some wow factor in a room. I also like the play on shapes here. A feature wall doesn’t have to be a square block of paint. A circle or stripe can bring with it a sense of surprise and really lift a room.
If you’re concerned that these pastel-like tones are going to make your room feel too soft or juvenile, dark wood tones and black in large proportions are your friends and will help ground the space. Lush green plants will also work well here, so if you’re rocking 2015’s biggest interior trend, Botanics, it’ll feel right at home with these new Pantone colours.
Rose Quartz will also come alive with some copper or bronze pops, along with hints of deep, rich reds like maroon. I don’t think last year’s Pantone Colour of the Year, Marsala, really took off, but you could bring in a darker variation of if alongside Rose Quartz with great results.
Serenity will play nicely with lemon tones and soft greys – and is particularly divine going into the warmer months. The tones in this colour feel quite retro, so if you love a bit of a vintage throwback, this colour is all yours. It’ll also bring a sense of vibrancy to an all-white, Scandi palette.
